Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The PACU is a uniquely staffed and equipped area for monitored care necessary for safe patient transition to the post-anesthesia and/or post-procedural period.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor patients in the immediate post anesthesia unit, assessing the patient’s status as they emerge from anesthesia and safely regain consciousness.
  • Staffing requirements and the role of the registered nurse in providing direct patient care in the PACU are set forth in the practice recommendations promulgated by the American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN).
  • In the Recovery Room, the focus is on the patient’s recovery from anesthesia and the return to baseline vital signs. Consideration is given to the procedure, anesthesia care, patient comorbidities, and the patient’s physical status to recognize, minimize and manage any issues or complications.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities

Shift Hours: Variable start times, 12-hour shifts, On-Call required (one night per week, one weekend day per month)


Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Nursing
  • BSN preferred

License/Certification Requirements:

  • Current CA RN license
  • BLS through the American Heart Association
  • ACLS required

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience
  • Critical Care experience preferred
