Job Description

Under the direction of Dr. Judy Tan in the Cancer Research Center for Health Equity (CRCHE), Division of Population Sciences at Cedars-Sinai, the Research Postdoctoral Fellow will work directly with Dr. Tan as part of a dynamic research team to advance research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in prevention and behavioral sciences to promote health equity. The Fellow will receive individualized mentorship in preparing and submitting a successful extramurally funded career development grant proposal. Strong methodological background (including but not limited to dyadic analysis, multilevel modeling, mediated moderation and moderated mediation analyses, meta-analysis) and mixed methods research skills are required. Strong interest in developing an academic research career in health equity working with minoritized communities (e.g., BIPOC LGBT+) is required. Prior research experience with prevention and control in cancer or other related field is required.

Working independently but in close collaboration and consultation with Dr. Tan, other Research Scientists, and lab team members, the Research Postdoctoral Fellow will assist in or lead the preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts for peer review from data generated from NIMH- and NIA-funded research as lead author or co-author. Not responsible for generating grant funds.

Essential job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare an extramurally-funded individual career development grant proposal for independent research career in social and prevention sciences and medicine, public health, social-behavioral intervention development.
  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
  • May participate in publications and presentations as lead author or co-author.
  • Designs and performs experiments. Will keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Tan.
  • May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols.
  • Compiles, analyzes, interprets, and summarizes data.

Department Specific Duties

The Tan lab seeks a post-doctoral fellow with a strong background in social and health psychology, behavioral science, prevention science, public health, community health, and/or epidemiology. We seek highly motivated individuals interested in robust preparation for careers as independent investigators engaged in social and behavioral research in academic medicine. The post-doctoral fellow will receive training in grant sponsorship and will have opportunities to submit grants and first-authored publications. This position is available immediately.

  • Works with Dr. Tan to develop career development and training plan.
  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
  • Participates in publications and presentations as first author or co-author.
  • Designs studies and performs analyses with guidance from the Principal Investigator.
  • Develops, adapts, and implements new research techniques and protocols.
  • Analyzes, interprets, summarizes and compiles data.
  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.
  • Meets with Dr. Tan on a regular basis to discuss research progress and plans
  • Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization.
  • Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment.

  • Applicants must have obtained or will obtain PhD/MD or related degree by the start of hire. Review of application and interviews will occur on a rolling basis.

    • Writing samples
