What will you be doing:

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is responsible and accountable for the application of the nursing process, supervision of clinical practice, research involvement, consultative services, inter and intradepartmental liaison, education, leadership, and patient care management across the health care continuum from preventive, acute care discharge. A CNM's practice incorporates both independent decision-making abilities and collaboration with the board certified/eligible physician to provide expert care to the patients. The CNM is responsible to the medical director and the chief nursing executive (CNE) and functions as an integral part of the medical team. The CNM practices under the Board of Registered Nursing California code of regulations, Title 16, CCR section 1379; utilizing Nurse Midwife Standardized Procedures. These are developed in a collaborative effort within the area of specialty, department of Nursing and the Hospital Administration, incorporating CSHS goals and represent an interdisciplinary approach to patient care delivery. The CNM provides individualized care upholding CSHS philosophies including but not limited to care consistent with Nursing Standards of Care/Practice, the Plan for Provision of Nursing Care, the Plan for Provision of Patient Care, the Performance Improvement Plan, the Patient Education Plan, the Professional Organization Standards, Code of Conduct, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures. She/he enhances competency skills through continuing education programs.  She/he demonstrates the ability to provide care to special patient population and those with diverse cultural background.  She/he performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to age and developmental milestones of the population(s) served which may include neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, and adult. She/he can identify the ability of the age specific population served to follow direction/instructions and give consent.  She/he can identify safety concerns and institute measures to provide safe environment and provide appropriate assessment, intervention, and evaluation of patients with consideration of developmental milestones in the population served.

  • Identifies Basic/Advanced FHR tracings, including identifying early, late, variable, and sinusoidal patterns consistent with NICHD Terminology.
  • Initiates the appropriate nursing interventions and ensures appropriate communication to Primary MD with Charge RN and Chief Residents.
  • Performs specialized procedures specific to patients in Labor and Delivery including, but not limited to, NST, CST, Internal Fetal Monitoring, and assisting with operative procedures.
  • Provides expertise in management of labor, delivery, and recovery. Teaches staff appropriate use of medications for induction/augmentation along with cervical ripening agents.
  • Utilizes appropriate protocols and guidelines along with documentation, dosage, side effects, and interventions.
  • Provides labor support to both patient and family members while attending to the psychological and social needs of the childbearing process.
  • Role models best practices for staff and continues to provide education and emotional support during entire labor process.
  • Reinforces safety measures while utilizing proper communication with SBAR during hand offs and reporting to both MD and Management Staff.
  • Implements emergency and/or maintenance measures independently and in collaboration with Perinatologists, Neonatologists, House staff physicians, and Anesthesiologists as necessary.
  • Attends at least 6 OBGYN Grand Rounds per fiscal year. Attends 6 out of 12 APN meetings per fiscal year. Conducts at least 2 peer reviews per fiscal year. Participates in at least 8 hours of community service per fiscal year. Provides resident and staff nurse education.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements:

Two (2) plus years’ experience as Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM).

Educational/Licensure/Certifications Requirements:

Master of Nursing Degree

Current State of California Registered Nurse

National Certification for Certified Nurse Midwife

Current DEA license

Basic Life Support (BLS)
