What you will be doing in this role?

The Assistant Manager, Sterile Processing, will oversee all operational, technical and personnel activities within Sterile Processing ensuring high quality sterile processing standards are met. This role will function as a leader and expert and is accountable for the timely delivery of instrumentation needs for Perioperative Services and other procedural areas and ensures sterile processing staff perform the decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of equipment, instruments and supplies following established procedures. Together with unit manager assists with all administrative processes, including human resources, budgeting, staffing, quality improvement planning and educational development programs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Directs daily operations of the activities and initiatives in support of all Sterile Processing responsibilities, this includes decontamination, wrapping, sterilization of instruments and infection control.
  • Ensures all organizational activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, federal regulations, Joint Commission, AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) standards and laws governing Sterile Processing responsibilities.
  • Rounds on OR (Operating Room) units and develops and maintains effective relationships and communications with Operating Room leaders and other key customers. Additionally, maintains an active/visible presence within Sterile Processing Department.
  • Reviews productivity reports and other metrics in collaboration with Supervisors and Educator and implements development or applicable performance management, including supervising or developing action plans to support staff development.
  • Provides effective oversight and serves as a resource to staff; and assesses the total resource needs (additional staffing, shift assignments and overtime) of the Sterile Processing department to maximize available personnel and resources to meet Sterile Processing department needs.
  • Assists in monitoring established performance improvement systems to ensure the highest level of Sterile Processing standards are being met.
  • Oversees the Sterile Processing Supervisors and ensures department and medical center policies are being adhered to and there is consistent application across the department.
  • Reviews all staff corrective actions and performance management evaluations.
  • Assists Sterile Processing Manager with the development of departmental goals, new hire evaluation process and promotes inter/intra departmental collaboration. Assists Sterile Processing Manager with the recruitment and retention of staff and facilitates staff meetings.
  • Resolves escalated situations involving instrumentation and sterilization.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED, bachelor’s degree in Sterile Processing, Surgical Technology, or related field preferred.
  • Five (5) years of progressive supervising and Sterile Processing experience to include decontamination, wrapping, sterilization and infection control.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
