Job Description

Under direction of the Executive Director, Comparative Medicine the Supervisor, Comparative Medicine – Operations is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Comparative Medicine Operations, logistics and equipment program inclusive of supervising operations technicians. The Supervisor is responsible for managing personnel training, work assignments, coordinating technical activities for operations staff, and providing operational recommendations to the Executive Director. The Supervisor is responsible for the creation, usage and archiving of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), working instructions, and all documentation related to their area of responsibility. The Supervisor is also responsible for equipment maintenance and repair, supply inventory and the sanitization processes among others.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs all tasks associated with the daily supervision of operation technicians including hiring, onboarding, training, work assignments, time off approval, performance evaluations, employee development plan, performance improvement plans and disciplinary actions when needed. 
  • Develops, implements, and maintains a training program for operations technicians which includes safety training and record keeping. Responsible to keep all training required for this position up to date.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains compliance procedures that adhere to institutional, federal, state and local regulations for cage washing and other vivarium support areas. This includes personnel safety, sanitization, waste disposal, equipment operation, ordering and purchasing equipment and supplies
  • Creates, reviews, revises, and maintains documents, including but not limited to: SOPs, working instructions, safety procedures, equipment guidance, daily maintenance logs, quality assurance forms and SDS Binder, delivery manifests, manifold/spigot forms, chemical inventory and non-chemical consumables/supplies inventory.
  • Inspects, operates, troubleshoots equipment, and systems, included but not limited to: tunnel washers, rack washers, autoclaves, automatic water bottle fillers, avidity water systems, bedding dispensers, pressure washer, ride-on floor buffer/floor scrubber and cold rooms.
  • Oversees the Quality Assurance program for all washers and sterilizers including testing and record keeping
  • Works closely with Cedars’ Facilities Management and Research Facilities Operations to identify, report and follow up on maintenance and repairs under their purview. Work closely with vendors providing maintenance and repair services for all the equipment assigned to the operations, equipment, and logistics team. Search for and establishes agreements with contractors for physical plant projects and equipment purchase, maintenance, and repairs
  • Maintains the vivarium loading docks in compliance with applicable regulations and oversees their use.
  • Coordinates transport of supplies and other items between vivarium buildings.
  • Responsible for Comparative Medicine equipment and supplies inventory, including tagging, tracking, records, storage locations as well as disposal of unused/damage items.
  • Responsible for the management of chemicals used in the areas under their supervision, including disinfectant stations. This includes ordering, inventory, handling, storage, disposal, documentation, training of personnel and interfacing with EH&S.
  • Leads the institutional program of sanitization verification. This includes knowledge of the testing systems, developing documents for its use, result interpretation and actions to take, as well as personnel training and documentation.
  • Oversees operation of decontamination systems (e.g Halo) including equipment routine maintenance and set up, personnel training and decontamination scheduling.
  • Responsible for department owned vehicle including maintaining service up to date, routine cleanliness, updating list of employees on insurance policy, smog certification and maintaining registration current.
  • Makes recommendations to the Executive Director and take action to improve infrastructure, systems and outcomes. Collaborates with other groups within Comparative Medicine as well as external departments to improve processes and efficiency efforts.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements:


High School Diploma/GED required.

Bachelors degree in related discipline preferred

License:

Assistant Laboratory Animal Tech (ALAT) at time of hire, or eligible to receive within 90 days required

Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) at time of hire, or eligible to receive within 1 year required 

California Drivers License required 

Experience:

5 years of experience working in a laboratory animal science, cage washing and vivarium logistics.

2 years of experience in leadership experience working in an Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) accredited animal research facility

Physical Demands:

Able to perform moderate lifting. Able to sit, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Able to read papers and online documents. Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job functions.
