Job Description

What you will be doing in this role:

The Chaplaincy Resident will be completing a yearlong course of Clinical Pastoral Education (3 CPE Units) training with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center CPE Program. The CPE Resident will complete clinical hours at an assigned facility via a clinical placement agreement. Over the course of the residency, the CPE Resident will gain advanced training in providing spiritual care services. This includes the spiritual support and ritualistic needs of patients, families, and staff through the Cedars-Sinai CPE Program.

Under the direct supervision of an ACPE Certified Educator or ACPE Certified Educator Candidate, the CPE Resident will:

  • Be assigned to clinical areas to deliver direct pastoral/spiritual care services to patients, families, and staff.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary collaboration, including attending rounds, referrals, chart note documentation, communicating and advocating for patients’ spiritual needs and working with clinical departments to support the emotional/spiritual wellbeing of the patients.
  • Provide staff care through various programs.
  • Coordinate referrals with CPE Interns assigned for clinical practice and coordinate restocking of spiritual care supplies and resources.
  • Participate in and/or lead interfaith/religious services as requested.
  • Support after-hours emergencies on an as needed basis, as determined by and negotiated with leadership.
  • Participate in Cedars-Sinai Clinical Pastoral Education program, including for the minimum specified hours per week of group and individual supervision with a Certified Educator/Candidate and CPE peer group to meet program and certification requirements.
  • Participate in weekly Cedars-Sinai Spiritual Care Department Staff Meetings.
  • Help support the faith specific religious/spiritual needs of patients collaborating with religious leaders and their hospitalized congregational members. This will include coordinating resources for holidays, such as Ramadan, Passover, and Shabbat.
  • Support on-boarding and orientation process of new CPE Interns at the beginning of each new CPE Unit.
  • Document daily statistics reports of visits and services provided.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience in providing spiritual care in a patient care setting and minimum of 400 supervised hours (1 Unit) of CPE required.
  • Ability to engage in pastoral/spiritual caregiving to persons of any faith group.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural practices, and values.
  • Capable of theological and spiritual reflection with persons.

Educational/Certification Requirements:

Bachelor's degree to meet requirements of Level II CPE and with expressed interest in spiritual care required.

Enrollment in a master's program, completion of a Master of Divinity program, appropriate equivalent degree-earning program leading to ordination, endorsement for chaplaincy, other faith-based service preferred.
