The Figueiredo lab seeks a post-doctoral fellow with a strong background in cancer epidemiology. Recent efforts in our lab are passionate about three areas: (1) identifying gene-environment interactions using genome-wide approaches; (2) cancer disparities focusing on Latinos and (3) cancer survivorship. This individual would join the Cancer Prevention and Genetics Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Center. We seek highly motivated individuals interested in robust preparation for careers as independent investigators engaged in cancer epidemiological research that incorporates -omic approaches with environmental, behavioral and lifestyle factors to study disease risk, treatment response and outcomes. The post-doctoral fellow will receive training in grantsmanship and will be encouraged to submit grants and first-authored publications. This position is available immediately.

Dept Specific Primary Duties

  • Works with Dr. Figueiredo to develop training plan
  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
  • Participates in publications and presentations as first author or co-author.
  • Designs studies and performs analyses with mentorship from the Principal Investigator. Develops, adapts, and implements new research techniques and protocols.
  • Analyzes, interprets, summarizes and compiles data.
  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.
  • Meets with Dr. Figueiredo on a regular basis to discuss research progress and plans
  • Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization.
  • Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation of maintenance of specialized equipment.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Formal training in Epidemiology
  • Skilled in biostatistical analysis (familiarity with analysis of -omic data is recommended but not necessary)
  • Background in medicine and oncology
  • Proficient in scientific writing and publishing in peer reviewed articles

Educational Requirements:

  • Doctorate (PhD or MD) in Epidemiology or area related to field of specialization
