Job Summary:

The Exercise Physiologist will routinely assist in the development and delivery of physical activity interventions. This includes but is not limited to- performing pre and post assessments for study participants in order to determine appropriate course of exercise (e.g., type, intensity, duration, etc.). Under general supervision, the Exercise Physiologist will conduct aerobic and resistance training fitness assessments and will develop and deliver appropriate physical activity routines to individuals and/or groups. Through interdisciplinary and collaborative actions with research teams, will assist with the development of research grants and studies. They will perform procedures on participants with diverse cultural backgrounds and health needs, identify safety concerns in the related population, and will institute measures to provide a safe environment. May serve as a preceptor for students/interns. 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
•    Ensures that all pre-program screening/clearance are obtained before completing initial assessment.
•    Runs physiological assessments with study participants and community members 
•  Interprets assessment findings in order to develop and deliver appropriate individual and group physical activity programming.
•    Contributes to the development, adaption, and implementation of new research techniques and exercise protocols
•    Recognizes and assesses serious complications, responds with appropriate action.
•    Accountable to remain aware of the contraindications of testing.
•    Applies knowledge to support development and delivery of research grants and study interventions
•    Updates and modifies treatment plan in collaboration with research team as appropriate.
•  Provides supervision during physical activity programming, discussing progress with study participants, and     investigations, modifying individualized protocols as necessary.
•    Participates in research protocols as directed, and has awareness and understanding of major
projects. 
•    Incorporates age, disability and cultural diversity during interventions.
•    Identifies safety concerns regarding disability/limitations and/or related population and institutes
appropriate measures to provide a safe environment for participants during assessments and exercise
program. Maintains clutter-free environment while providing intervention
• Responsible for identifying malfunctioning equipment, performing troubleshooting and escalating to appropriate supervisor. Utilizes equipment according to established procedures.
•    Assists in the orientation of new staff, students, interns and volunteers, as required.
•    Actively participates in ongoing performance improvement projects specific to designated research program or research study.

  • Effectively communicates /explains procedures to the age-related population and makes adjustments accordingly.  
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable documentation relative to physical activity delivery for research studies. Actively stays abreast of research, technology, and protocol updates.
  • Provides feedback on grant proposals, publications, and presentations related to physical activity assessment, development and delivery.
  • Engage in continuous self-improvement and adhere to CSHS compliance plan, code of conduct, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

*Local travel may be required for community and offsite activities.


Educational Requirements:

B.S. Degree in Exercise Science/Physiology   
M.S. in Exercise Science/Physiology 

Licenses:

ACSM/NSCA certification preferred.
CPR/AED Certification (Adults and children) preferred. 

Experience:
2+ years-Experience in running physiological assessments, as well as developing and delivering physical activity protocols with study participants and community members.
2+ years-Experience delivering exercise programming and assessments to populations with diverse health needs (including cancer survivors, individuals with disabilities, and/or individuals with anxiety or depression).
