Summary of Essential Job Duties:
The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (WOCN) is an RN who is an expert clinical practitioner responsible for providing consultation, education, and client management expertise for specific clinical areas. The WOCN nurse is responsible for the planning and delivery of care of the client with a newly created stoma and care of the client with skin breakdown. The WOCN nurse provides guidance, direction and assistance to the health care team in maintaining optimum quality of nursing care. She/he works on a peer level with the Clinical Nurse Specialist. The WOCN provides nursing care consistent with Nursing Standards of Care/Practice, the Plan for Provision of Nursing Care, The Plan for Provision of Patient Care, CSMC Code of Conduct, the Performance Improvement Plan, the Patient Education Plan and Professional Organization Standards_ She/he maintains competency skills including the ability to provide care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds. He/she can identify the ability of the patient to follow direction/instructions and give consent. He/she can identify safety concerns and institute measures to provide a safe environment; and provide appropriate assessment, intervention, and evaluation to patients with consideration of development milestones.
Education Certifications/Licensure Experience Physical Abilities
Bachelor's degree in Nursing required; Masters preferred
Current and active California Registered Nurse License. Graduation from a certified Enterostomal Therapy school accredited by the International Association of Enterostomal Therapy (IAET) or wound care nurse with five years' experience. WOCN Certified. Board Certified in Enterostomal Therapy (every five years)
Minimum of two years experience with special knowledge of Enterostomal care, minimum of one year demonstrating skill in planning. teaching, and directing, full command (verbal and written) of the English language
Physical Demands: (e.g., lifting, standing, walking) The physical ability and perceptive ability to satisfactorily perform all direct and indirect patient care functions
