The Research Associate III works closely with the Biobank Director and Associate Director in basic pathology, histology, and immunostaining tasks in the Biobank and Translational Research Core (BTRC). The RA III will also be responsible for interfacing with investigators at all stages of their requests for BTRC services. Will serve as the project manager for BTRC projects; understands the scope of the request, assigns tasks and tracks project progress. Has responsibility for interfacing with Research Facilities Operations (RFO) with respect to the SSB facilities including freezer/LN2 storage units.
The RA III will ensure that all equipment and storage units within the BTRC are operating optimally, are serviced regularly, that all monitoring systems are maintained, and that emergency contact lists are regularly updated. Techniques used will include, but are not limited to, tissue embedding, processing and sectioning, histological and IHC/IF/ISH staining. Biospecimens handled can be both fresh or fixed from both human and animal sources. The RA III will be responsible for data generation, assay optimization and troubleshooting. Will be detail oriented, possess excellent communication skills and have extensive knowledge of histology and immunohistochemistry theory and techniques. Will also observe and comply with safety standards and procedures and assist in preparation of data for publication, grant applications and/or presentations at scholarly meetings.
As a Research Associate III for the BTRC, you will also be responsible for the following:
- Primary contact for investigators seeking Translational Research Core services.
- Meets researchers (first meeting together with director/associate director of BTRC) for protocol development and manages project workflow in the biobank.
- Submits price quotes for biobank histology services according to fee structure.
- Oversight of instrumentation, training researchers to use instruments and managing instrument bookings.
- Responsible for developing and implementing instrumentation, storage units, and histology SOPs.
- Supervises day-to-day schedule and duties of histology staff. Carries out histology-related duties as needed.
- Works closely with the histology team in the design and implementation of novel multiplex IHC panels.
- Coordinates with biobank CRA for iLab scheduling and billing.
- Responsible for biospecimen Q/C through regular qRT-PCR analysis.
- Oversees BTRC storage facilities including coordinating with research facilities operations.
- Oversees laboratory maintenance and the introduction and use of new histology equipment.
- Delivers regular seminars about BTRC services and instrumentation to the CSMC research community.
- Works closely with the BTRC research pathologist in the design and execution of macro or microdissection experiments in the BTRC.
- Works closely with the histology team to organize weekly slide reviews, and in the generation of reports and plans arising from slide review sessions.
- Additional duties, administrative or otherwise, at the discretion of the BTRC Director/Associate Director.

- Bachelor of Science Degree, required. Master of Science Degree, preferred.
- Three to five (3-5) years of experience in area of research specialization.
- Has technical skills and expertise in an area of study including, but not limited to, Histology.
- Strong computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent organization skills and very detail-oriented; learns new tasks quickly; self-motivated; works well independently with minimal supervision; works well with others, and able to multitask.
- Strong interpersonal skills for interaction with peers, patients, physicians, and other customers of the medical center.
- Thorough technical and theoretical understanding of PI’s research objectives.
- Mastery of complex or unusual technical procedures and protocols.
- Ability to research, develop and implement new laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Knowledge of human resource and administration policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of budgetary requirements and policies.
