Join Dr. Simon Knott, Ph.D., and his research group as a Research Associate II in the Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics!

The Knott laboratory is focused on understanding the mechanisms that cancer cells use to evade standard of care and experimental therapies. This entails developing and analyzing mouse models of drug resistance as well as profiling patient tumor material to identify cellular pathways that are amplified in response to the therapeutic onslaught.

Are you ready to be a part of breakthrough research?

Working under direct supervision, the RA II performs routine and increasingly complex laboratory tasks and procedures and develops technical expertise in one or more areas relevant to research projects. The RA II will participate in research activities involving all aspects of the research process, including, but not limited to; investigation, technical, testing/validation of results, and report findings. The RA II will perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of laboratory research projects and assist in general laboratory maintenance. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of increasingly complex experimental protocols and procedures and assists in the design of new complex or unusual protocols and techniques.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results, and assists in identifying and troubleshooting unexpected results.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and supports laboratory operations.
  • Maintains lab equipment and related records and may coordinate the use of lab equipment.
  • Assists in the operation of specialized equipment, as required by the area of research.
  • Assists in the preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings.
  • Observes and complies with safety standards and procedures.
  • Orients research laboratory assistants or lower-level research associates and undergraduate student researchers on day-to-day lab operations and routine procedures.

Department-Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the organization and carry out research projects as directed by the Principal Investigator and/or other designated members of the research team.
  • Assists in monitoring and ensuring compliance with safety standards and procedures.
  • Assists with analyzing data and preparation of scientific findings for publication and presentations.
  • Contributes to research discussion from other members of the research team.
  • Implements and optimizes new laboratory methods under the supervision of a designated investigator.
  • Abides by IRB proposals and protocols relating to projects in the laboratory.
  • Abides by Animal Licenses and protocols related to projects in the laboratory.
  • Undertakes research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator or other designated investigators in the research team.


  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biological science required.

Experience and Skills:

  • At least one (1) year of research lab experience is required. Two (2) years preferred. Understanding of general research objectives and familiarity with routine laboratory procedures, experimental protocols, and overall lab organization.
  • Experience in areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, cancer biology, cell biology, genetics, and genomics.
  • Experience in cell culture and handling of mouse animal models.
  • Technical skills and expertise in specified areas of study including RNA, DNA, and protein-related work, cell culture, and molecular biology (e.g. PCR, cloning).
  • Competency in computational analyses (RNA and DNA sequencing files), animal modeling of disease, or histology is preferred.
  • Knowledge and basic skills in cell and molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, RT-PCR and western blotting, immunofluorescence, FACS, and Flow Cytometry.
  • Function efficiently as an individual and cooperatively with a team of faculty, research scientists and associates and graduate students.
  • Highly motivated, independent with superior interpersonal, communication, and strong organizational skills, including excellent written and oral communication.
  • Computer skills include, but are not limited to, Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple clerical trials, and attention to detail.
