Research Associate I - Posadas Lab - Cancer Institute

The Posadas Lab is studying the biology of cancer metastasis, with emphasis on the model of prostate cancer. The ultimate goal of all our laboratory research projects is to develop new therapies to prevent metastatic progression of and to cure advanced prostate cancers. The Posasdas Laboratory is affiliated with the Urologic Oncology Research Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and the Department of Medicine, Hematology Oncology Division.


The Posadas Lab is looking for a Research Associate to join their lab. The Research Associate I will perform routine and increasingly complex laboratory tasks and procedures and develops technical expertise in one or more areas relevant to research projects involving preparation of buffers and media, mouse and human tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, mouse handling, and regulatory compliance. The Research Associate II will participate in research activities involving all aspects of the research process, to include, but not limited to; investigation, technical, testing/validation of results, and report findings. The Associate will perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of laboratory research projects. The Associate will observe and comply with safety standards and procedures, assist in preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings, and assist in general laboratory maintenance. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

What you'll do:

  • Demonstrate experience in tissue culture (i.e. maintaining cell lines, using aseptic techniques, count and split cells), molecular biology techniques (i.e. DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, western blot) and animal handling and care.
  • Must be comfortable in working with research animals (i.e. mice).
  • Performs a variety of routine laboratory tasks and procedures.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed project records of experiments and results.
  • Assists with animal husbandry.
  • Maintains lab equipment and related records.
  • Performs lab maintenance duties, including glassware cleaning and sterilization.
  • Maintains stocks of general lab materials, and places orders for lab equipment and supplies.
  • Assists new students and fellows in the laboratory.
  • Assists in the operation of specialized equipment and machinery.
  • Observes and complies with safety standards and procedures.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree in biological sciences.

Experience:

  • Experience in tissue culture (i.e. maintaining cell lines, using aseptic techniques, count and split cells), molecular biology techniques (i.e. DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, western blot) and animal handling and care.
  • Understanding of general research objectives.
  • Working knowledge of database management, personal computers, and presentation and imaging software.
  • Understanding of general research objectives.
  • Familiar with routine laboratory procedures and experimental protocols.
  • Must possess computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel and Word.
