The Koltsova Lab is interested to define and characterize the role of cytokines in the control of microbiota-driven, metabolic and cellular mechanisms helping to regulate immune cell activation and inflammation in various immune-mediated pathologies such as atherosclerosis, AAA, obesity and cancer.

Chronic low-grade inflammation is a key component in various diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, obesity and cancer. Its becoming increasingly clear that chronic inflammation can be driven by changes in microbiota composition and function, affecting the production of metabolites, which in turn regulate the activation of various immune cells. Therefore dietory and environment factors as well as homeostasis of intestinal epithelial cells can be directly implicated into the pathogenesis of various immune-mediated diseases.

A growing body of evidence demonstrated that cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are chronic inflammatory diseases of the arterial wall with a large and previously underappreciated contribution of immune system into disease initiation and progression. Immune system plays a dual role in cancer: while chronic and tumor-elicited inflammation promote tumor growth, anti-cancer immune response is crutial for cancer protection. Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and predisposes to many cancers, worsening their prognosis. Most notably, obesity overwhelmingly promotes liver and colon cancers. Cytokines are key regulators of inflammation and important players in auto-inflammatory diseases. Cytokines play an important role in the regulation of intestinal microbiota, production of various metabolites, which in turn contribute to immune cell activation and chronic inflammation. Cytokines are also important regulators of the bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells and mature immune cells production, which represents an important arm of the immune system function.

The Postdoctoral Scientist - Koltsova Lab will perform routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period in the field of cancer biology. May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols. and interprets data. May assist in preparation of grant proposals.
