Nurse Practitioner - Neuro Oncology

At Cedars-Sinai, the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute doesn't treat all cancers the same. There are more than 20 cancer centers, programs or specialized services that specialize in treatment and leading edge research into specific forms of cancer. These centers and programs provide patient centered care and state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical procedures.
 
Essential Duties:
 
  • Performs a thorough age specific history and physical along with appropriate follow up and documentation of the results.
  • Analyzes and organizes the care of clinically complex patients/clients, including sociocultural, cognitive, functional, nutritional and educational evaluation, leading to the development of a problem list and patient management plan.
  • In collaboration with interdisciplinary team, implements and directs patient management plan utilizing appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic-invasive and non-invasive modalities.
  • Performs appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for identification and management of patient diagnosis following established standardized protocols. These may include but are not limited to: venipuncture, arterial puncture, lumbar puncture, insertion and removal of umbilical catheters, placement and removal of peripheral arterial catheters, percutaneous silastic catheters, and or multi-lumen catheters, endotracheal inturbation, needle aspiration of pneumothorax, suprapubic bladder aspiration, partial or double volume exchange transfusion, suturing and removal of sutures, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Appropriately documents procedures and follow-up as necessary.
  • Communicates to and guides staff in structuring/relaying information regarding patient diagnosis, management plan, and progress to the patient/client/family and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Assesses, facilitates, and role models appropriate resolution of patient/client/family psychosocial problems and/or support needs.
  • Assesses quality of patient care delivery and identifies opportunities for changes in practice, rooted in evidence-based standards of care/protocols, which promote positive patient outcomes.
  • Identifies and implements cost-saving activities (e.g., early, but appropriate discharge, clinical practice given at reduced costs, product evaluation, nursing practice changes, etc.).
  • Provides emergency resuscitation within established guidelines.
  • Assesses and facilitates resolution of the patient/family psychosocial problems and support needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge about protection of human subjects in research, approval of human research through the Research Compliance Office, and control of research projects in the clinical area.
  • Provides and documents patient, family and significant other education, including smoking cessation, pneumococcal vaccination and other patient specific subjects, utilizing effective teaching methods. 
  • Improves the accuracy of patient identification: Uses two identifiers when obtaining blood   sample or administering medication or blood products.
  • Improves the effectiveness of communication among caregivers:
a) Read back utilized when taking telephone orders or receiving critical test results
b) Documentation does not utilize “Do not use abbreviations”
  • Eliminates wrong patient, wrong procedure, and wrong site procedures: Verification of patient, procedure and site before procedures.
  • Improves the safety of using infusion pumps: Medication with clinical indicators will be administered using an infusion pump (e.g. dilantin, vaso-active medications).
  • Reduces the risk of patient harm resulting from falls - assess patient’s risk for falling, including risk associated with medication regimen and takes action to address any identified risk.
  • Reduces the risk of health care acquired infection by complying with current CDC hand washing guidelines and CSMC isolation policy.
Educational Requirements:
Master of Science degree in Nursing

License/Certification Requirements:
Nurse Practitioner license in the State of California
National Nurse Practitioner certification required (or eligible to obtain)
Prescriptive privileges in the State of California
BLS from the American Heart Association required

Experience:
Minimum two (2) years of Oncology Nursing experience strongly desired 
Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in Oncology highly beneficial

Physical Requirements:
Normal physical requirements for routine administrative responsibilities carried out at a desk.
