Licensed Vocational Nurse - LVN - Angeles Clinic

Our board-certified fellowship-trained medical oncologists, surgeons, immunotherapists, pathologists, and dermatologists work closely together to advance cancer care.

 

This position functions to perform clinical and clerical duties in the outpatient clinic to provide quality patient care. The medical oncology LVN will work closely with the physicians and other clinic personnel to facilitate patient care and patient flow for The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute. She/he will interact directly with patients, both in person at the time of clinic appointments and visits, as well as by telephone to respond to inquiries.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Such duties include but are not limited to:

1. Prepares the clinic for patient visits by participating in daily clinic tasks including but not limited to stocking and cleaning exam rooms, calibrating weight scales, checking refrigerator temps, retrieving lab reports from the lab, stocking the fax and printers, reviewing and distributing incoming faxes, and other duties.
2. Prepares patient charts for the upcoming day:
a. Print patient schedule, obtain patient charts, review progress notes and green sheet from prior visit, and retrieve any outstanding test results needed on the chart prior to the patient’s visit.
b. Meet with the physician to review the chart and to clarify any questions regarding the upcoming visit as needed.
c. Run trend reports for any labs, as indicated, and place copy of lab trends and test results onto the front of the chart for review by the physician on the day of the visit.
3. Identifies patients with 2 identifiers (Name, DOB/MR #), and greet patients with proper etiquette by addressing them as “Mr., Mrs., or Ms.” or as requested specifically by the patient, and escort them to a room.
a. Places patient identification armband on all patients entering the infusion room or radiology dept for treatment, tests, and procedures.
b. Takes vital signs and weight and records legibly in chart. Measure height for all new patients and record in chart. (All weights and height must be measured, not asked).
c. Anticipates physician requests for any tests that need to be run.
d. Asks the patient if they have had any recent tests or procedures and obtain results for the chart.
e. Interviews patients to obtain medical information and any untoward signs and symptoms to report to the physician or supervising RN.
f. Reviews patient’s current medications, documents on the medication reconciliation form on chart including the medication name, dose, route and frequency, and reports any medication issues to the physician.
g. Identifies any needed refills needed and facilitates prescription refill orders.
4. Assists physicians in examining and treating patients.
5. Administers oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, topical, or intra-dermal medications after the medication has been properly verified for the 5 rights of medication administration (patient, medication, dose, route, and frequency)

6. Documents medications administered on the patient chart.
7. Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians’ instructions to patients.
8. Starts IVs as needed.
9. Performs venipuncture or finger-stick for withdrawing blood sample.
10. Collects and prepares laboratory specimens.
11. Performs nasal smears and throat cultures under physician supervision.
12. Informs the physician of any questionable test results.
13. Documents all chart entries legibly on the patient record including but not limited to the vital signs, medications, injections, notes, labs, and charges.
a. Assures that the proper diagnosis is documented on all tests that are referred.
b. Assures that all injections have received prior authorization.
14. Performs general office duties such as answering telephones, scheduling appointments and/or procedures, logging patients, and filing chart documents.
15. Triages and directs telephone calls for physicians, nurses and laboratory needs.
16. Takes and returns pharmacy calls in a timely manner
a. Obtains insurance authorizations for prescriptions.
b. Calls in prescription refills (medications without change in dose, route or frequency only), as authorized by the physician and document on the chart.
17. Arranges for outpatient orders and services (including, but not limited to transfusions, home health, physical therapy, medical equipment, etc).
18. Operates EKG, pulse oximetry, and other equipment for routine diagnostic tests and document results on the chart.
19. Maintains a respectable and courteous manner with all patients, families, physicians, employees, offices, pharmacies, and hospitals.
20. Breaks down charts daily by filing all paperwork and assures that all billing sheets are sent to the billing department in a timely fashion.
21. Provides coverage for other physician practices as needed.
22. Performs other similar or related duties as necessary within scope of license, using down-time to help in other areas and/or as assigned by supervisor.

4. Demonstrates willingness to assist co-workers in completion of daily tasks or special projects to support the clinic’s efficiency.
5. Seeks guidance and direction as necessary, for the successful completion of job duties, ask appropriate questions when in doubt.
6. Maintains appropriate records/notification of time worked, vacations, seminars, overtime, and professional commitments related to this position.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Successful completion on an accredited LVN school
Current California LVN license
Current IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawl Certification through California Board of Vocational Nursing
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Suite

Able to deal effectively with the significant physical and emotional problems of cancer patients, work well in stressful situations, solves problems independently using good clinical judgment.
• Able to communicate and work well with dedicated clinical team, in order to maintain an atmosphere in which high quality health care will be delivered.
• Capable of understanding and setting priorities to maximize work effort.
• Must have a quality service attitude and be able to work additional hours, or modify work shift, if needed to meet patient and clinic needs.
