First Cook - Patient Food Services - Per Diem - Days

Job Summary:

With minimal oversight, the First Cook ensures high quality of food processing by strict adherence to proper production techniques and the production order resulting in timely service to the customer.  The First Cook for Deluxe Services might be required to work in other areas as assigned, and may be required to audit the work of cooks and others.  This position is responsible for the sanitation of all specialized cooking equipment assigned to area. Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the cultural, age, developmental, and environmental safety issues of the patient population(s) served.  Works in collaboration with leadership staff to provide high quality nutrition care and food service.


Educational requirements and/or preferences (Licensure, Registration, Certification, Experience, Other):

 
Education:A minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent desirable.  Completion of certificated program in food service or comparable training preferred.

Experience: 
Four years cooking or comparable work experience, with a minimum of four years stable work experience.
Other: Organizational ability to include coordination of multiple tasks within established timeframes, excellent interpersonal skills, and must be customer oriented.
The department will train to our system, however employee must have excellent work record (commendations, O/T time, and no absenteeism problems).  Must be able to show creative ability.
Must be able to communicate in English, verbally and in writing, with staff, customers, and patients over the telephone or in person.
Must possess a minimum computer competency comprised of a working knowledge of Windows or comparable system (specifically including keyboarding and mouse skills).  As applicable to individual job duties and expectations, employee must additionally possess a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation development, e-mail, browsers and on-line reporting.
Must be able to interpret institutional/high volume recipes, and prepare food accordingly.
Accurately follows oral, pictorial, and written directions.

 

Physical Requirements (physical abilities essential to perform the job):

Must be able to distinguish color coded dating systems to assure proper food rotation.

Must be able to  lift and move cases of supplies and/or food product weighing up to 40 pounds.

Must be able to prepare and present food attractively for customers and/or patients.

Must be able to stand and walk distances over the greater portion of the assigned shift

Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling.

Must be able to see, speak, and hear clearly.


Work Environment (work environments, hazards and exposures the employee may encounter on the job):

Must be able to perform assigned duties in a work environment with temperature changes - extreme cold when working in and around freezers, and extreme heat when working around ovens, grills, broilers, steamers.

 May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.
Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit conditions.

Subject to frequent hand washing and use of alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
Subject to interruptions.

Subject to irregular hours; occasionally covering varied shifts.

 Subject to regular changing priorities and work assignments.
Subject to moderate noise level in work environment.
