Summary of Essential Job Duties

The Clinical Associate Ph.D. is a licensed member of the laboratory team who works independently with minimal supervision.  Assigned activities include development and implementation of diagnostic procedures, overseeing aspects of daily technical operations of the laboratory, and teaching functions such as assisting in the educational programs of the department and in the training of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Clinical Pathology residents.  The Clinical Associate Ph.D. works under the direction of the Division Director and collaborates in the overall operation of the Division including assisting in the formulation and development of policies and procedures as well as short- and long-term goals and objectives for the Division.  Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the developmental issues of the patient population(s) served:

Verification/Validation of tests / perform/direct the testing, capable of data analysis and write up and write PPM

Good knowledge and understanding of molecular methods

Good knowledge and understanding of MALDI-TOF

Good working knowledge of regulations and quality control/ able to assist in the CAP inspection process

Ability to learn advanced new procedures and train others in the laboratory for such procedures

Assist the director with stewardship directives, working with pharmacy and infectious disease

Assist hospital epidemiology with strain typing of organisms

Provide assistance to the director in answering problem physician calls

Educational Requirements

Doctoral degree in Microbiology.


License/Certification/Registration Requirements

A valid clinical license in a related science from the California State Department of Health.

Board Certification.



Five years’ experience in Clinical and Molecular Microbiology with expertise in:

Routine bacteriology, virology, mycology, mycobacteriology and molecular techniques. Assay development and validation, MALDI-TOF, strain typing and sequencing of organisms, antimicrobial stewardship and close working relationship with pharmacy, infectious disease and epidemiology.

Advanced knowledge of CAP regulations and principles of QC/QA and QM. GLP, GMP
