Pharmacy Support Specialist

The Pharmacy Support Specialist supports the physician and clinical staff offices in the delivery of health care by performing a variety of medically related tasks in the area of pharmaceutical supplies and services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Oversees appropriate use of Pyxis
a. Provides training to all nursing staff on the appropriate use of Pyxis
b. Ensures staff is properly signing out medications and all medications are accounted for.
c. Restocks appropriate medications into Pyxis as par levels decrease.
d. Performs inventory of medications in Pyxis on a weekly basis.
e. Checks for expired medications on a monthly basis
f. Sends expired medications back to manufacturer/vendor, if applicable.
g. Assures all refrigeration temperatures are in range
h. Generates various reports from Pyxis on a daily/weekly/monthly basis depending on the report

2. Facilitates Injectable Medication Authorization process
a. Educates and reinforces office staff regarding the completion of the injectable medication referral form.

3. Assists Pharmacy Buyer with Medication Purchasing (if necessary)
a. Creates P.Os for all medications to be purchased in Peoplesoft
b. Procures medications from appropriate vendor based on established or projected inventory needs for all medical group office locations.
c. Verifies accuracy of medications received and conducts follow-up when problems are identified.
d. Performs weekly audits of vendor invoices to ensure company is billed at the contract price.

5. Audits charts to determine discrepancy between Pyxis and EMR.

6. Pyxis Reports
a. Creates standard reports
b. Creates ad hoc reports as necessary

7. Coordinates pulling of recalled medications throughout medical suites and returns to the manufacturer/vendor.

8. Other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements/Preferences:
Education Certifications/Licensure Experience Physical Abilities High school diploma or general education degree (GED); minimum of 3-5 years related experience in a medical office setting; knowledge of medications including injectables, working knowledge of medical terminology; computer literate to perform basic data entry (knowledge of Excel spreadsheets preferred); proven team player with excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills.

Requires dependable transportation to drive between facilities and proof of current automobile insurance coverage.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Certified Pharmacy Technician License
Requires valid California drivers license

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
